Teaming up with performing arts collective WorldTheatre, entrepreneur and media mogul Avi Oster is bringing literature to life in support of the Pushcart Prize, an award for emerging literary talent.

Oster, who heads Avi Oster Media and made his name in real estate, is using the media firm to sponsor “Speaking in Tongues”: a special, one-night-only charity performance featuring some of the biggest names in film, stage and publishing. Speaking in Tongues, which smacks of Oster’s signature style as a high-level connector, will raise money for the Pushcart Prize Fellowships, helping to keep alive one of the most prestigious awards in literature.

WorldTheatre was chosen as entertainment partner for the event because of their specialty focus: bringing scenes from the written word to life as dramatic performances on stage. The scenes at the center of the benefit event will include performances from Amy Irving (Carrie), CCH Pounder (Avatar), Chris Bauer (True Blood), Colman Domingo (Scottsboro Boys), Harris Yulin (Training Day, Scarface), Kathryn Erbe (Law and Order: Criminal Intent), Kevin Corrigan (The Departed), and Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire). The scenes being performed by these stars are to be hand chosen from the writing of Pulitzer Prize winners, Guggenheim Fellows and PEN/Faulkner recipients.

The Fellowship will place the proceeds of the evening into the endowment of the Pushcart Prize, an annual anthology of literature chosen from small publications around the world. The prize helps bring worthy new names into the conscience of the global literature and publishing scene, and is often the first time such work is featured internationally.
